Angels go to the Proms - December 2007
Angels go to the Proms was a Christmas Concert with a punch that got you in the mood for the festive season! This concert showcased the best of classical music, including a strong contemporary flavour for the first time ever!
The concert explored the concept of angels, with Angels sent from God (singing Handel's heavenly Hallelujah Chorus & the climactic final chorus from the opera, Faust), Guardian Angels (Bette Midler's 'Wind Beneath My Wings' and Sarah McLaughlin's 'Angel') and 'sentimental/relational' Angels (Elton John's Candle in the Wind & Lena's Song from As It Is In Heaven). These themes combined a show exploding with enthusiasm, inspiration and Christmas carols!
Austria goes to the Proms - May 2007
The fourth production by the Peoples Proms was a creative cycle from the youthful compositions of Schubert and Mozart (established by the Wunderkinder) in the first half, to the dramatic maturity of Wagner and Mahler in the second which mirrors the circle of life presented from birth to death and back to life again. Opening with praises from the chorus to God and concluding with Mozart fearing His judgment in Don Giovanni and the Mozart Requiem shows off the understated beauty that progresses to a 19th century explosion of art. Moving through diurnal changes in time and mood, from romanticism (Tannhauser) to intoxication (Drink, Drink Drink) to the calling of nuns to holy orders (Ave Maria) - something Maria may have sung in the abbey. Childlike innocence is also inspired with the Von Trapp family singing Edelweiss (audience invited to stand and sing in true Proms tradition) whilst interrupted with overtones of militarism (Stout Hearted Men) before the climax is achieved in a dream of foreboding (Elsa's Traum) and finally linking to Mahler's vision of the afterlife in the Resurrection Symphony, thus completing the circle of life.
Patriots at the Proms - October 2005
Patriots was a concert about being committed to a cause or an ideal, believing in it so much that you are prepared to suffer and indeed die for it. In this production we chose music from seemingly unrelated sources and molded them together in order to tell a story of loyalty, belonging and suffering for their homeland. It is as though this same group of people experience the trauma and jubilation of the peoples throughout the ages and this is why the chorus remained onstage for most of the performance as they had effectively become time travellers.
